According to information provided by the Illinois State Police, the accident happened as a motorist (identified as Gabe Tucker, 41, of Geneva) driving a 2011 Toyota SUV “rear-ended” a vehicle (driven by Andrew Mack, 56, of Batavia) in front of him as he was traveling westbound, near the Aurora/Naperville border.  The accident happened at approximately 5:45 p.m.

A “chain-reaction” crash followed.  An excerpt from the July 6, 2017 Northwest Herald article titled “Geneva man rear-ends car on I-88 causing 5-car crash, police say“:

Both Tucker’s and Mack’s vehicles continued forward to hit another vehicle – a Ford Fusion driven by a 50-year-old woman. Mack’s vehicle also struck two other cars, including that of 39-year-old Heather Lake of Aurora. The Ford Fusion driver, whose name has not yet been released by police, was transported to Edward Hospital in Naperville in serious condition.
