An accident involving drugs (one driver’s alleged drug use) as well as the lawsuits and court rulings concerning the accident, are discussed in the February 20, 2018 Cook County Record article titled “IL Supreme Court calls for fix of rules apportioning blame in multi-car crashes…” As seen in the article, a November 2, 2013 accident occurred on Interstate 88 (I-88) near Naperville. The three-vehicle accident involved a driver who allegedly had cocaine in his system at the time of the crash. One of the drivers involved in the crash was said to have “severe permanent injuries” resulting from the crash.
One of the most significant traffic safety issues is impaired drivers. While drunk driving has been a leading cause of traffic accidents for many years, drivers who are impaired by drug use has also become a leading cause for traffic accidents. The subject of drug-impaired driving, especially as it relates to DuPage County, is discussed on the “Vehicle Accidents Involving Drivers Under The Influence Of Drugs” page.
As discussed on that page, there are many drugs that can cause significant amounts of impairment. These drugs can be both illegal as well as legal (prescription) drugs that are being abused or misused. Among the most common drugs used by drug-impaired drivers are marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and meth. However, there are many other drugs that can be used.
Impairment that is caused by drug use can be increased if two or more are used at the same time. This “mixed drug use” can have hard-to-predict effects on a driver’s ability to drive.
Another factor that can cause the level of impairment to increase is if there is the consumption of alcohol along with the drug use.
On this site, DuPage County accidents in which impaired drivers are involved in accidents are summarized in posts found under the “DuPage County DUI” category.
