Driver Charged In Crash Involving Naperville Police Car

There was a car crash in Naperville early Saturday morning (July 9, 2016) in which a driver “rear-ended” an unoccupied Naperville Police car, and then fled the accident scene.  The driver was charged with DUI in relation to the accident.

According to Naperville Police, the accident happened on 75th Street just west of Book Road.  This intersection is shown below:

At the time of the crash, the police car had its emergency lights on.  At the time, the Naperville Police officers – none of whom were injured during the collision – were investigating a previous traffic accident.

The driver was later pulled over.  He was identified as Kevin F. Kauper, 46, of Bolingbrook.

As seen in the July 12, 2016 Naperville Sun article titled  “Man accused of driving into parked Naperville police car,” at the time of the accident Kauper “… had a blood-alcohol content of .21 at the time of his arrest, police Sgt. Steve Schindlbeck said. A motorist is considered to be legally drunk under Illinois law with a blood-alcohol content of .08.”

An excerpt from the July 11 Naperville Patch article, titled “Driver Allegedly Crashed Into Naperville Squad Car, Kept Going“:

Kevin F. Kauper, 46, was charged with driving under the influence, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, failure to provide information, failure to reduce speed approaching an emergency vehicle, improper lane use and unsafe tires, according to the Daily Herald.
