“Head-On Collision” On Route 53 Leads To Death Of Driver

There was a fatal multi-vehicle accident involving a “head-on collision” Thursday (December 7, 2017) on Route 53 in Romeoville.  According to Romeoville Police, the accident occurred at 5:43 p.m. on Route 53 between Renwick Road and Taylor Road.

The accident was a “chain-reaction crash” that involved a “head-on collision.” As is often the case with these “head-on” crashes, the collision happened after one car went into the lanes of oncoming traffic and collided with an oncoming car.

According to the Romeoville Police Department, the accident happened just south of Taylor Road and started when a driver, identified as David Muzzey, 58, was driving northbound in a Mercury when he “rear-ended” a Subaru.  The collision sent the Mercury into the opposing (southbound) lanes where it collided “head-on” with a Mini Cooper.  The Mini Cooper in turn struck a Chevy Silverado.  A Chevrolet Colorado was also hit during the “chain-reaction crash.”

According to the DuPage County Coroner’s Office, Muzzey, 58, of Romeoville, was pronounced dead Sunday evening at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.  He suffered multiple traumatic injuries in the crash.

The driver of the Mini Cooper, identified as a 34-year-old Joliet man, was hurt and taken to Amita Bolingbrook Hospital for treatment of his accident injuries.

The other three drivers involved in the crash were not injured and refused medical treatment at the accident scene.

The Romeoville Police Department Traffic Unit is conducting the traffic accident investigation.  They ask those with information concerning the crash to call Officer Wagner at 815-886-7219 and refer to case number 17-4810.
