Police Car “Rear-Ended” During Crash In Carol Stream

There was a car accident Sunday evening (August 20, 2017) in Carol Stream.  The accident involved a car that “rear-ended” a police car on North Avenue near Schmale Road.

According to information provided by Carol Stream Police, the accident happened at 6:46 p.m.  A Carol Stream Police car had pulled over on the shoulder of westbound North Avenue near Schmale Road as part of a traffic stop.  At that time, another vehicle drove onto the shoulder and “rear-ended” the parked police car.  An accident scene photo indicates the extent of the vehicle damage.

Two Carol Stream Police Officers were hurt during the collision and taken to Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield for treatment of their accident injuries.  The injuries sustained were considered to be non-life threatening in nature and both were released from the hospital.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the rear of the police car suffered minor injuries, which he was treated for at GlenOaks Medical Center in Glendale Heights.

He told police he fell asleep behind the wheel. He was issued five citations, including failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, improper lane usage, driving on the shoulder and operation of an uninsured motor vehicle.

The accident investigation continues and is being conducted by the DuPage County Accident Reconstruction Task Force.
