The crash closed traffic on Butterfield Road in both directions, so the Wheaton Police Department and DuPage County’s M.E.R.I.T Major Crash Reconstruction Team could perform an investigation. Traffic reopened at 3:30 p.m.

Additional details and possible updates can be seen in a variety of media sources, including the article mentioned above.

Various reasons for motorcycle accidents that occur in DuPage County are discussed on the “Motorcycle Accident Injuries And Fatalities That Happen In DuPage County” page.

Additionally, there are special risks inherent in early-season motorcycle riding. The “Early-Season Motorcycle Riding Safety Issues” page discusses these various risks. The risks are of various types, and can range from road hazards to undiscovered maintenance problems that have developed over the winter months.

Another potential safety issue – one that is of great concern – involves motorists not being aware of motorcyclists. This is typically referred to as drivers “not seeing” motorcycles. It is a concern at any time during the year, and has been the cause of many collisions involving motorcycles and other vehicles. Motorists “not seeing” motorcycles can be a heightened risk early in the motorcycle riding season as drivers haven’t seen motorcycles on Illinois roadways for a number of months.

Among the various types of crashes that occur when a driver “doesn’t see” a motorcycle is when a driver makes a left-hand turn immediately in front of an oncoming motorcycle. If a collision occurs, the motorcyclist often suffers serious accident injuries. As seen in many accidents of this type that have been summarized on this site, these injuries are often life-threatening in nature and often result in fatalities.
